camera help
I need some camera advice. I think we might be receiving a very very generous Christmas gift from my parents this year :) A Nikon DSLR. But here is the thing.... I am a beginner. As in, I pretty much only use my iphone to take pictures. I don't even know how to hold a DSLR. So I don't know what to ask for!! I have pretty much decided on a Nikon over other brands but I'm not totally 100% set, so feel free to recommend something different if your favorite happens to not be a Nikon.
I need help!!
What camera should I ask for? Remember that we are beginners and are starting with absolutely no photography knowledge. But we also don't want something that we'll be "over" too soon, you know?

Have you asked Marilyn Monroe? I know she has been researching cameras as well :)
My first SLR camera was/is a Nikon D5000 and I love it. It's in the mid-range I believe for price and difficulty in using. I find that it gives you an easy AUTO function, but allows you to also learn more in depth photography if you want to. HIGHLY recommend.
I'm a Nikon user here! My first was a d80, and now I have a d300 and the d7000. LOVE Nikon, but Canon is excellent as well. It's hard to give a recommendation without knowing your price range- email me if you want some in depth advice:)
I purchased a Cannon T3i (they also have a T3 which is cheaper) and I LOVE the Cannon. I hadn't had any previous experience with SLRs myself but Cannon cameras are very intuitive. I considered Nikon because my point and shoot is Nikon but after research and testing Cannon came out on top. For me, I think it was the ease of use with the Cannons that really made it my top choice.
I have a Nikon D3000, and LOVE it. It's a few years old but still an AMAZING camera. Price range is about $500. Can't wait to see what you end up with.
Andrew got me (us) the Nikon D3100 DSLR last year for xmas. I use the auto feature and my photos are average. When ANY OTHER PERSON uses my camera they get the best pictures EVER! Crisp, clear, amazing. So, it is my conclusion that I just cant hold my hands still.
